Mapping the World: I will be projecting a blank world map up on the wall. We will be working together as a class to fill in the map. We will then have a class competition where students will be paired into teams and compete to find locations on the map the fastest.

Birthday Lineup: Students will be attempting to lineup according to their birthdays without talking or writing. They will then attempt to lineup in alphabetical order by last names.

Mapping Pretest: Students will be working individually to complete a pretest over world, regional, and local mapping.

Tower Building: Students will be given toothpicks and marshmallows. In their small groups, students will work together to try and be the group with the tallest free standing tower after 10 minutes.

Reflection: If you had the chance to do the tower building competition again, what would you do differently and why?

Circle: Come up with an item that you would bring to a picnic. The item must start with the same letter as you first name. You will have to say the name and picnic item for the 3 people ahead of you.

Seating Chart: You will be getting your first seating chart of the year. Once everyone is situated at their table, each group member will share out their favorite pet they have every had.

Discuss & Report Out: We will be going over the procedure of discussing as a small group and then reporting out as a large group. We will be doing this a lot in class.

Classroom Rules: You will be working together in small groups to come up with a set of classroom rules. You will then be reporting out to the class. The oldest person in the group will be recording and the youngest will be reporting out.

Seating Charts: You will be working together in your groups to make a t-chart for the positives and negatives of having a seating chart. The tallest person in the group will take notes, the person with the darkest hair will report out.

Claim, Evidence Warrant: We will be clarifying together as a class what claim, evidence, warrant is.

Seating Chart Paragraph: Using the t-charts you just put together, you will have 7 minutes to write a claim, evidence warrant paragraph arguing whether or not you would use seating charts if you were a teacher.

Two Truths and a Lie: You will be playing two truths and a lie with the people at your tables.

Birthday Lineup: Without talking or writing, line yourselves up in order of your birthdays from January to December.

Learning Target: Students will know how and why African Colonization started and the lasting affects it had on the continent. Students will know what Apartheid was and will be able to compare it the American racism of the 20th century.

Circle: If you could become famous for anything, what would it be? What is the one thing you've accomplished in my class that you are most proud of?

World Issues Project: You should work on your World Issues Projects until 1:00pm.

Triangular Trade Explained and Simulation: I will be putting a map on the board to illustrate the aspects of Triangular Trade and we will also be doing a quick simulation.

Lasting Affects: We will quickly be going over the lasting affects that the Transatlantic Slave Trade had on Africa.

Types of Colonization: We will quickly be going over the difference between economic and settler colonization.

Apartheid: We will be taking time in class to introduce the idea of Apartheid and how it worked. We will be talking about the White minority having power over the Black minority as well as looking at the separation of different black tribes within South Africa.

Trevor Noah: We will be reading some chapters out of the book Born a Crime.

Atlantic Slave Trade: We will be watching this video as a class.

Slave Trade Simulation: We will be doing a simulation to demonstrate how the Atlantic Slave Trade worked.

Timeline: We will be working together as a class to construct a timeline of European Colonization, starting with the Atlantic Slave Trade and ending with complete European Imperialism after the Berlin Conference. I will be explaining key vocab along the way.

Video on Colonialism: We will be watching a video that supports the idea we read about in the Newsela articles. You will be learning about how a why Europe took over Africa in this video.

Colonialism Simulation: We will be doing a simulation in class that will allow you to see how colonialism happened. We will be looking at the differences between Settler Colonialism and Economic Colonialism.

Africa vs America: We will start looking at the similarities between the colonization of Africa and of America.

Newsela Articles: The class will be breaking up into two sides. One half will become experts on one article, while the other half will become experts on the other. After about 10 minutes of silent reading time, students will share what they learned in the article they read with students who read the other article. You will be doing this in pairs.

Atlantic Slave Trade: We will be watching this video as a class.

Expedia: You will be learning how to use Expedia to book a flight, hotel, and rent a car. We will also be looking at how to find attractions for different places as well as looking at the example I created.

You will be going to newsela.com to read an article that talks about each of the eight physical regions of Africa. When you are done reading, you are going to find an image on the internet for each of the physical regions and give a short blurb as to why you think this image does such a great job of representing that region.

The Africa Stereotype: After completing the newsela article, we will be talking about what kind of stereotypes we just proved false about Africa.

Google Earth: Your goal is going to be to map out the eight regions of Africa using the article you read from newsela as well as using Google Earth. Remember to use a different color for each of the 8 regions.

Learning Target: Students will be able to exhibit their understandings of governments and societies by reflecting on their decisions they made in the game and will be able to relate these decisions to the real world.

Circle: What is one highlight from your weekend? What is your favorite movie of all time?

Game Debrief: We will be discussing the game we played all of last week and what we learned as it pertains to this class. The first question you will be answering is "Why did we play this game?" Then we will be discussing in class the idea that everyone played the game with a Monarchy as well as a Totalitarian government. From this understanding, we will be discussing how things would have gone differently in the real world if the people had a say in the game. 

Game Reflection: You will be writing a reflection on the game in class. This is a summative reflection and is due by the beginning of next class. Here is the rubric.

Homework: Finish your Game Reflection if you did not finish in class.

Model Government Projects Are Due Saturday January 12th at Noon if you want to get $100 for the game next week. If you get a 90% or better on this assignment, you will be awarded $200 for the game.

Model Government Projects Are Due At The End Of This Week!!! Due to us having our civilization simulations next week, there will be no extension for this. This means that if we have a snow day this week, you need to be prepared to work on this project during that snow day to make up for lost class time.
